Where to begin?? The last few months have flown by in a whirlwind, so much so I still have to pinch myself to ask 'Did that just happen?' But yes! Much to my absolute astonishment and delighted I was crowned the UK Makeup Specialist of the Year 2016 by Professional Beauty in February at an amazing glitzy black tie event in London.
So what actually happened...
Those who know me will know how much passion I have for this industry. I constantly strive to be better, to learn more, to bring my clients the best service and keep up to date with the latest products on the market. No one knows this better than my lovely husband who is tortured by my ambitions, always having to listen to my daydreams, always having to answer my 'should I...?' questions. In a bid to keep challenging myself and keep my creativity flowing I love entering makeup competitions as well as attending makeup workshops and seminars. So, one night when I was (supposedly) doing admin on my computer I announced to my husband that I had entered another makeup competition. He knows the pressure that comes with such events, but he also knows the determination, desire and ambition I have to be the best I can possibly be and the actual enjoyment I get from competing. That's where it all started...
To my delight (and shock) I was selected as one of five finalists to go to London to compete in November. I was a bag of mixed emotions. The other finalists were amazing; some who's work I knew of, some who's products I have in my kit and all of whom inspired me. I was nervous to compete against them. So, on 19th November my husband and I set off on a day trip to London for me to compete. It was a bit of an adventure. A two and half hour delay on the runway as our plane was broken but we stuck with it and got there on time to the London College of Beauty Therapy just off Oxford street.
Our brief set was to create a Spring/Summer 2016 wearable makeup look. In my prep I researched the beauty trends, looked at colour forecasts and completed moodboards to support my look. You can view my moodboards by clicking the link on the right.
On the day we completed our makeup looks on a college student whilst the judges assessed our application techniques and asked us questions about what we were doing. After the live judging we then had an interview with the two judges and three curtain judges came to view our models and score us. It was a quick exit once the interviews were over to catch our flight home as I had a wedding the next morning for the lovely Geraldine.
The awards were then announced at black tie event in The Brewery in London on 28th February. It was lovely to get all glammed up with my husband with total VIP treatment and lots of champagne. ITVs Stephen Mulhern hosted the event with more than 800 leading beauty industry figures from across the world in attendance.
Winning was the most surreal feeling as it honestly was such a surprise and I am totally overwhelmed. To have been selected by the judges for such a prestigious accolade is incredible and I am extremely proud. It was an honour being shortlisted against such a strong group of makeup artists and having the opportunity to showcase my skills to the judging panel in London was amazing.
I am excited for what the future holds and thank Professional Beauty for recognising such high standards in our industry and the judges for seeing my potential.
Here's to the future...
